Ride the River – River Action Ride the River – Kids Ride Free
6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Sunday, June 20 The Freight House, Davenport (start). Join River Action in a bi-state bike tour of the Quad Cities as it celebrates its 26th year. Begin at The Freight House in Davenport, proceed to Leach Park, Bettendorf, and cross the Mississippi River to Moline, Illinois on the Celebration Belle riverboat. Those crossing by bridge will cross Arsenal Island, and continue the route to the suggested turn around in Hampton, returning to Davenport via Arsenal Island (open from 6 a.m. to noon) or the Centennial Bridge (open until 3:30 p.m.). Riders can turn around at various spots on the route. All total, it’s possible to ride through nine communities and mountain bike on Sylvan Island! Cost is $10 for adults that register before May 15. Events at Moline Public Library – Peter Rabbit and the Landscapes of Home: Beatrix Potter Saturday, June 12th 2:30 p.m. Moline Public Library Meeting Rooms. This is a first-person Chautauqua-style interpretation of Beatrix Potter and her multiple accomplishments. Potter, over various life stages, describes herself as a writer, artist, scientist, and a philanthropist. She dramatizes her role as a woman who impacted the domestic landscape of children’s books and rural England. Performer Nancy Huse holds a PhD in English from the University of Chicago. She has published numerous articles and delivered many presentations on American and children’s literature. This program is made possible by an award from the Illinois Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Illinois General Assembly.

Events at Bettendorf Public Library Extraordinary Women of the Bible program at the Bettendorf Public Library At the Bettendorf Public Library on Thursday, June 17, starting at 7:00 p.m., Dr. Rachel Z. Dulin will bring biblical icons to life in a costumed presentation which is empowering and entertaining. Alive, Unabashed and Passionate: Extraordinary Women of the Bible is meant to be provocative and lead to a greater understanding of the human experience, appealing to both men and women and to adult students of the Bible. Dr. Dulin will be available for questions after the program and will be happy to autograph her books and CDs which will be for sale. She was born in Israel, served in the Israeli army and is now an American citizen. She earned a Master of Arts and PhD in Religious and Theological Studies at Northwestern University and for most of her career was a Professor of Bible and Hebrew Language at the Spertus Institute in Chicago. Her lectures across the country include the Biblical View of Aging, the Status of Women in the Bible, and the Political Voices of the Ancient Near East. The Bettendorf Public Library is partnering with the Jewish Federation of the Quad-Cities, with partial funding from The Friends of the Bettendorf Public Library.

Art Exhibit: ‘Letterforms as Paramount’ (St. Ambrose Catich Gallery) Wednesday, June 2 – Friday, July 23. Gallery summer hours:
11 a.m. – 4 p.m., Wednesday-Friday, or by appointment. On exhibit will be the research journals, slates, broadsides, plaster casts and rubbings of the late Rev. Edward Catich. Catich was considered one of the world’s finest calligraphers; the foremost authority on the Roman alphabet; and an international expert on stone incising, typography and stained glass fabrication. German American Heritage Center in Davenport, Iowa visitors can explore the museum’s 4,000 square feet of permanent and special exhibits. Visitors will enjoy an interactive experience as they learn about immigrants’ journey by sea, train and foot, to their final destination at the German American Heritage Center building, which was originally a very busy hotel for thousands of immigrants in the 1860s. The German American Heritage Center works to preserve and enrich the German immigrant experience and its impact on the American Culture.
