On The Go With Joe Hutter
Seniors And Law
Enforcement Together (SALT)

If I give you a check for $8.25 will you agree to send me $14.99 monthly? Recently a company called “Collections Etc.” sent a check to a woman that on the outside of the envelope read “check enclosed not a rebate.” Small print on the check said “by cashing or depositing this check you are purchasing a membership in Buyer Advantage.” On the back it read that information about you would be transferred to Buyer Advantage and they will charge you $14.99 a month to be a member. This will be charged to you automatically unless you call them to cancel the membership. The print also said that if you buy $5,000.00 in items from them, you will receive a check back for $100.00.
Buyer BEWARE – especially when you sign your name to something that is too good to be true or if it is a legitimate offer, is it really a good deal? Be very careful when you say “yes” on the telephone, computer or through the mail.
With summer here be aware of home repairs. Check with the Better Business Bureau about the business. Get a written estimate and a contract. Call the Iowa Attorney General’s Office toll free at 1-888-777-4590 to check if there are any complaints against the business. Don’t fall for someone who knocks on your door with a good deal. Remember…if it sounds too good to be true, it’s probably not a good deal.
Our June S.A.L.T. meeting is at 9:30 a.m. on June 23rd at CASI. Come and join us. If you have any questions call Pam at the Scott County Sheriff’s Office at 563-326-8217.
Take care.
