Race for the Cure – Get Involved!
Busy summers and busy weekends force us to pick and choose where we go and what we do. You can be sure that your participation in the Susan G. Komen Quad Cities Race for the Cure® is time well spent, particularly since up to 75 percent of the proceeds from the Race remain in the greater Quad Cities to support breast health services such as mammograms for women who can’t afford them.
One in seven women will get breast cancer over a lifetime. Mammography is key to detecting breast cancer early. If it’s caught early, the 5-year survival rate is greater than 98 percent. That’s why your participation in the Race is so important: you can help fund a mammogram for a woman who otherwise might go without. Race proceeds also fund medical alert bracelets, wigs, and breast health education. And, of course, about 1/2 of the money raised is used for research to find a cure.
Here’s how you can get involved in the 21st annual Race on Saturday, June 12th at 8 a.m. at the i wireless Center in Moline:
Sign up to participate! Both a 5K and a 1.2 mile walk/run are offered. You can register online at www.komenquadcities.org through 4 p.m. on Friday, June 11th or you can register at the i wireless Center on Friday, June 11th from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
Sleep-In for the Cure! If you can’t be with us on Race day, you can still be with us in spirit. Sign up for Sleep-In, and you can still help the cause and we’ll mail you a t-shirt after the Race.
Shop! A unique vendor will be at this year’s Race selling pink ribbon merchandise out of a semi-truck trailer parked outside the i wireless Center on Friday and in the i wireless parking lot on Saturday. A portion of the sales benefit the Race.
Donate! On your registration form, you can make a donation to Komen.
Next year, consider asking a business or organization you’re involved with to be a Race sponsor. And, consider forming a team of walkers or runners to participate in the 2011 Race.
