War Hero Returns Home
And we’re givin’ him the bridge!
Our very own Congressinal Medal of Honor, Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart Recipient John F. Baker Jr. came home to put his name on the I-280 Bridge. From this time forward it will be a bridge named BAKER.
On July 31st Jumer’s Casino and Hotel and the 299 Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans hosted the official dedication ad renaming of the I-280 bridge as well as the unveiling and dedication of the monument, located close to the front entry at Jumer’s Casino and Hotel. This impressive obelisk is dedicated to Mr. Baker’s selfless deeds as to all Vietnam era veterans whose gift to this country was their Youth, their Honor and their Blood.
At the July 31st dedication, four-time Pittsburgh Steeler Superbowl legend and combat wounded veteran Rocky Bleier gave the rip-roaring keynote speech. Mr Bleier is the celebrated author of Fighting Back. This nonfiction narrative is a stirring account of Rocky’s will to overcome grievous injury on the battlefield and play football as a running back when doctors said he’d never walk again.
