World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15th. Each year an estimated 5 million older persons are abused, neglected and exploited. And, older persons throughout the United States lose an estimated $2.6 billion or more annually due to elder financial abuse and exploitation, monies that could have been used to pay for housing, food and medical care. Experts believe that for every case of elder abuse or neglect reported as many as 23 cases go unreported!
Once a year on June 15th, communities around the world plan activities and programs to recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. It’s an opportunity to share information and spread awareness about elder physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, exploitation, neglect, abandonment and self-neglect.
Elder abuse can occur anywhere. It affects seniors across all socio-economic groups, cultures and races. Dementia is a significant risk factor and isolation can also contribute to risk.
Everyone can make a difference! Learn the signs of elder abuse and neglect. Report your concerns if you suspect elder abuse. Don’t assume that someone has already reported a suspicious situation.
