April Showers Bring May Flowers and Oh So Much More!

By Karen McCoy
Lifestyle Coordinator, Ridgecrest Village

The first day of May is May Day. I remember making May baskets and delivering them to neighbors. Flowers bloom, the grass turns green, and we see the beginnings of new birth. The sun is dominant in the sky, the light nurtures the land and the human spirit. The thought of a ride in the country and a picnic sounds wonderful, a great way to begin summer. Watch the skies for meteor showers!

A few fun facts about May:

Never buy a broom in May.

Cats born in May catch snakes instead of mice.

May begins and ends on the same day of the week. This is unique to this month.

The United States space station launched in 1973

Big Ben began to chime at St. Stephen’s Tower in 1859

In May we celebrate Mother’s Day and Memorial Day, but did you know that May is also Older Americans Month? This month we celebrate getting older and appreciate all we have to offer.

In the past, aging was seen as a passive activity, something that just takes its course. Today seniors stay active far later into life. They work with their health care professionals to take an active role in their care. Together, they are changing the definition of what it is to be an older adult.

We see them advocate for themselves and others. They remain engaged in volunteer activities. They share wisdom they learned by years in the workforce and mentor younger people. Others concentrate on physical and mental well-being. They make conscious decisions to stay active. Seniors today have a sense of purpose and pride.

Get involved, pick up a new hobby or continue a beloved hobby. Make your goal one of increased social activity.
You can do all of this at Ridgecrest Village. Call and schedule a tour.
