A Pause for Poetry

Squirrel 401(k)

Iowa afternoon I sit
Idling in the park,
Watching sunbeams gild
And tint oak and ash bark,
See squirrels skylark,
Frisk over lawn and trees,
Joust with buzzing bees.
One buries an acorn,
He’s the serious one,
He does not play today,
He puts acorns in his 401(K),
He squirrels his acorns away.

Our Times

Our times are a desert of the real,
Where cactus spines soothe and
People drown in Nevada air.
Golden tumbleweed unfurls into
Car grilles, suffocating us in
Wealth. Jack rabbits big as
Antelope bound across the sand,
Clear in our windshields, not in
Our rearview mirrors, as we
Speed on.
