PUBLISHER’S CORNER

By Eloise Graham

It’s Senior Olympics Time

The Senior Olympics are not just field and track sports, they are soooo much more.

Do you doodle, string beads, write poetry or prose, paint, sculpt, dance or sing?  Well there is something for everyone to do at the Quad Cities Senior Olympics.

A friend of mine, a new member to the Senior Olympics Board, that participated and volunteered last year had this to share:

“After the Covid hiatus of 2020, the Senior Olympics took to the field in 2021. And for the first time, I found myself on that field, figuratively speaking. I volunteered at one event and took a Silver Medal in another. It is true that there were only two entrants in the event in which I medaled, but Silver is Silver! And I learned so much about the Senior Olympics that I want to share as we head into the 2022 Quad Cities Senior Olympics.

#1. There is an event for everyone. Many of the track and field and other sporting events are divided by age and gender, so you will be competing against your peers. Most of these events take place at Augustana In Rock Island.

#2. The swimming events will be held at the Davenport North YMCA this year as Augustana builds its new pool.

#3. Some events only exercise your brain. You don’t need to pre-register for the Spelling Bee. It will be held at Ridgecrest Retirement Village, 4130 Northwest Blvd, Davenport at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31.

#4. Entries for Arts and Crafts and/or Literary Arts are due May 6. Literary Arts (poetry, short stories – fiction or non-fiction) are submitted electronically. Arts and Crafts are dropped off at CASI, 1035 W Kimberly, Davenport. The Awards for these categories will be announced at CASI at 6 p.m. on  Wednesday, June 1.

#5. The Performing Arts event at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 2 at Ridgecrest could be a cheap date night. As with all events, there is no admission charge to watch. It was an amazing array of talent last year and will be the same this year.

#6. There’s always room for more volunteers!

#7. The Senior Olympics are run on a tight budget and depend on donations for much of the operating budget.

#8. The entry fee of $30 covers as many events as you can schedule.

#9. Details, schedule and registration can be found at QCSOgo.org.

#10. As in life, the only losers are those who don’t take part.”

Well said, my friend!

So enter the events, volunteer or just come and be a part of the audience.
