Happy Birthday, Uncle Sam – and all July Babies
By Eloise Graham
This July 4, 2023 Uncle Sam will be celebrating his 247th birthday. He has aged well; barely looks older than when he did in 1776.
Did you know that July rated second in the number of births per year? As of July 2022, there have been 7,500,795 recorded births in July making it the second most common birth month. August came in first. September came in third at 7,411,299. However, it is to be noted that both August and July have 31 days in them and September only has 30. Who knows what a difference a day can make?
Out of the 365 days available in the year, July 4 ranks 362 in popularity of the number of births per day. Fewer babies are born on this day or any other holiday. With scheduled inducements and C-sections available, doctors and delivery staff would rather be at home with their families; not increasing the size of someone else’s family.
The birth flower for July is the larkspur or delphinium. It blooms just in time for those July babies to enjoy each year. The flower looks a little like hyacinths with their neat little rows of flowerets. They come in a wide range of colors; red, yellow, white, blue or purple. The blue and purple shades are what most people associate with the flower.
The traditional birthstone for July is the ruby. This eye-catching jewel is a deep red, maybe with a hint of purple. In the gem trade it is called “pigeon’s blood.” It gets its color from trace amounts of chromium. The modern birthstone for July is the onyx. Some consider onyx, with its rich deep black to be a second choice for July’s birthstone. This is a banded stone with a deep black base and gray or white bands in the stone.
