Common Misconceptions about Hearing Loss
1 – You only need one hearing aid: If hearing loss is present in both ears, it is most appropriate to get two hearing aids. Binaural hearing aid use leads to better localization of sound (which can prevent injury), better understanding of speech in noise, reduced tinnitus annoyance, reduced listening effort, and better hearing satisfaction.
2 – An over-the-counter amplifier is “good enough”: The reality is that all hearing devices are not the same. Many over the counter devices are simple amplifiers and may not be optimally suited for different patients and their needs. Also, it is important to have support in device usage and there can be a lot of counseling on communication strategies that a person may not get without the support of an audiologist.
3 – Only old people need/get hearing aids: The reality is many younger adults are seeking help! Often, younger adults are working and have more complex listening needs. Untreated hearing loss can negatively affect job promotion, social wellbeing, and overall patient quality of life. Often, people with hearing loss need to use more mental energy compared to people without hearing loss.
4 – Your hearing is not bad enough for hearing aids: Often, we hear from patients that someone told them their hearing loss is not “bad enough” for hearing aids. Hearing aids can help even mild hearing loss. A better question to ask is, “Are you struggling to hear or understand speech?”. If you are, hearing aids can help!
If you have questions about your hearing health, try scheduling an appointment with an audiologist today. If you do not know who to see, ask your doctor or a friend who enjoys their hearing aids where they go. An audiologist is always happy to help you obtain better hearing!
