Some other things to remember:

  • Playing baseball with no adults to help kids with the rules of the game. Back then, baseball was not a psychological group-learning experience. It was merely a GAME.
  • Playing in the sprinkler on a hot day. If you got thirsty, you just drank out of the hose.
  • Buying stuff from the store that didn’t have safety caps or hermetic seals. Nobody had yet thought of trying to poison a perfect stranger.
  • Watching Saturday morning westerns like Roy and Dale with Trigger and Buttermilk, The Lone Ranger, The Cisco Kid, The Shadow Knows, Gene Autry.
  • Reading mysteries about teenage sleuths like The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew.
  • Eating Kool-Aid powder to see what color your tongue would turn.
  • Catching fireflies in a jar to use as a night light.
