The REAL Reason Your Balance is Bad

Balancing your body properly in space is an aspect of fitness that becomes a challenge for many older individuals. This is a fact I’ve personally encountered while instructing thousands of seniors in structured fitness routines designed to enhance their balance and strength. What often remains unnoticed about balance is its multidimensional nature. Let’s delve into a few of these areas, allowing you to appreciate the complexity of maintaining balance as you journey through your golden years.
When we discuss balance, it encompasses more than just routine “balance exercises,” like standing in place. In my teaching approach, I break it down into five distinct facets: static balance, dynamic balance, agility, core strength, and sensory cues. Static balance involves maintaining a stable position without movement. Dynamic balance focuses on staying upright while in motion. Agility embodies swift and precise body movements, a key aspect in reducing falls. Core strength provides a sturdy foundation for body and limb movement. Your vision and hearing also play significant roles in maintaining balance. When broken down distinctly, the ability to balance effectively goes beyond just standing in one spot.
So, how can this knowledge be applied practically? Integrating all of these elements into your balance and strength routine is the most effective strategy. The balance classes I lead at CASI in Davenport encompass these varied dimensions, helping attending seniors to approach their balance holistically. If you’re not a CASI member, you can access a large amount of balance workouts on my YouTube channel “All Strong Fitness,” available completely for free. With additional options at YMCA’s or other senior centers offering classes, this gives numerous avenues to work your balance.
Ultimately, a balance routine shouldn’t solely involve static exercises. Reflecting on the various ways balance impacts your life beyond standing still provides a glimpse into the complexity of improving balance. I look forward to connecting with you in my class or virtually through my YouTube channel. If you’re just starting out your balance journey, welcome! Keep moving and improving. 🙂
