Hilltop Campus Village Set for Exciting Renovations
The Hilltop Campus Village is excited about the plans for a facelift on Harrison in the 1600 block. Andrew Wold, property owner of the buildings on the east side of the block, will be giving them a new façade.
Mary Sue’s Café, 1615 N. Harrison and a long time mainstay in the area, will be one of the properties. Anyone who has ever been inside and has eaten there knows that the food is excellent, prices quite reasonable and comradery is par to none. Now there will be a new look to the exterior.
Winnie’s Wishes Resale Shop at 1605 N. Harrison is a “newbie” to the Hilltop Campus Village. They too, will be getting a new exterior look. But come in and see what they have in the interior.
“Winnie’s Wishes is a resale shop with a purpose. It opened in October 2011 to help financially support the shelter ministry, Winnie’s Place. Winnie’s Wishes is operated by volunteers 10 to 4 Monday through Friday and 10 to 1 on Saturdays. All items at the shop have been donated. Both are programs of Churches United. Winnie’s Place is an emergency shelter for women, with or without children, who are homeless or victims of violence. While in shelter, clients will work a program that addresses time-management, follow through, budgeting, parenting, domestic violence, employment and education.” Says Kit Miller, Shelter Manager and store manager. She adds, “Volunteers are always needed at the shop and normally work a three hour shift each week. We are looking for additional help on Saturdays. If interested in volunteering contact Kit Miller at (309) 764-9466 or kmiller@cuqca.org.
The shop has done more than help support the shelter ministry. It has been an additional link for Churches United in the community, an additional volunteer opportunity, an additional place to shop and donate, but above that it has been a place where many have formed new friendships and
support systems! The shop is a blessing to those shopping, volunteering and donating! “
The last property on the block is home to PhotoFROG. Some of you may be familiar with this building on the corner of Harrison and 16th Street. It was originally built as the Peoples Trust and Savings bank in 1917. Ranae Fenner is owner of PhotoFROG Studio. She is an artistic photographer with an eye for the unusual. If you are looking for the traditional family portrait or something out of the box, Ranae would be glad to have you call her for an appointment (563) 328-3764.
The Hilltop Campus Village is looking forward to the new renovations on this block.
